Behind the Camera
Zara Bogaski
Photography and creativity has been in my life since childhood. Art and creativity was always encouraged in my grandparent’s household where I lived. I remember vividly how my enthusiasm for photography started the day my grandfather, a painter, photographer and renaissance man, made a little slip-on macro lens for my little plastic camera, put some black and white film in it, then sent me off into my grandmother’s lush garden. He had a little dark room in the closet and printed my flower and insect pictures. I was hooked. Life took me through various career paths, a concert pianist, learned a little bit of pipe organ, a school teacher, didn’t quite finish graphic design, and I fell into the metal industry world helping develop an international department, sales, purchasing, and fabrication project management. Which happened by chance when I asked for directions to who turned out to be a VP of a metal company. However, I always kept up with my photography and my love for nature, and beautiful vignettes, details, and patterns. When phone cameras came along I became enthusiastic about their ease, availability, and possibilities. Pressed for time, a smartphone was easier to carry in my short outings. Learning its limitations and advantages helps you focus and simplify the process of image making. You can quickly edit if need to, and post directly from your phone. For me, visual communication is not so much about the art itself, but how you communicate your unique essence and messages with your own style.
“There is no better camera then the one you have at hand.”
During a period of time of three years straight, I went almost every single day to a beach in South Florida for my morning walk, to fill my soul watching the sunrise, the wildlife, the weather, and couldn’t help myself but take smartphone pictures at the beach everyday. I love my curiosity and finding out the why behind things to be able to understand, experiment, create, share, and find ways to use pictures to communicate and tell stories. Not only in the artistic way, but also looking for inspiration, exploring ways to make the processes more effective and efficient, diving into the neuro-psychology of visual communication, and into personal style development. In my own personal photography I gravitate around nature, landscape, architectural, vignettes, details, patterns, art, and useful backgrounds for copy or illustrations. I am ever evolving, learning, and experimenting in this vast field of photography and wish to share all of this with you.
